Former English star Gary Lineker was so upset with England’s underwhelming draw against Denmark at the Euros that he described the performance as *sh*t* on his podcast. Lineker also pointed out that the Three Lions skipper, Harry Kane, had to do better. When journalists brought Lineker’s criticism to Kane’s attention, he responded, saying ex-players should be supportive instead of being this critical. We all want to win a major tournament. I’m sure they want us to win a major tournament. Being as helpful as they can would be a better way to go about it,” said Kane.

Gary Lineker is completely fine with Harry Kane’s response to his critique. But he thinks the media created this fiasco. He says journalists are not brave enough to frame their questions at press conferences, so they rely on distinct analyst takes to interact with players.

Gary Lineker condemns journalists for the Harry Kane row

Gary Lineker’s critique of Harry Kane and Co. became the talking point in a recent BBC Sport episode he and Alan Shearer hosted. Soon enough, the former England international spoke about journalists’ role in the back and forth with Kane. “What happens in press conferences sometimes is that journalists use pundits or even myself on this particular occasion to try and make a point because perhaps they are not brave enough to make it themselves, so they use us,” said Gary Lineker.

After that, Lineker said everyone has been critical of England’s performance. Aligning with his former teammate, Alan Shearer said, “We’re there to analyze and our analysis was critical.” Shearer went on to say that their critique of England was aimed at urging the Three Lions to improve and make the best of the remaining European campaign.

Now let’s look at Harry Kane’s complete response to Lineker and Shearer’s criticism, which remains the talk of the town in soccer circles.

What were Kane’s comments?

After suggesting the pundits should have done better to instill confidence in English players, Harry Kane pointed out that England has not won a major tournament in years, and these former players have been a part of that failure. Then, he said, “I would never disrespect any ex-player. What I’d say is just remember what it was like to wear the shirt and that their words are listened to.”

It is evident from Kane’s comments that the former players turned pundits have upset him with their comments. However, both Lineker and Shearer took no offense at Kane’s reply. They said Kane always has the right to say the last word, and he responded finely.

Even so, the former English icons, like all pundits and players, think the Three Lions have a large room for improvement if they were to chase glory this Euro.
