Dustin Poirier has a wild idea for his next fight. ‘The Diamond’ of course, has indicated that he is close to hanging up his gloves, which is why his next outing is expected to be his last. And predictably, the lightweight legend wants to go out with a bang. This is why he has proposed a one-night, four-man tournament for the BMF belt with him, Dan Hooker, former BMF champ Justin Gaethje, and current title holder Max Holloway.

And while UFC CEO Dana White hasn’t immediately said no to the proposal, the idea does seem a bit too far-fetched. After all, nothing of the sort has been done by the promotion since the UFC’s earliest days more than two decades ago when all UFC events were indeed one-night tournaments. That is why there is a lot of buzz among fans about who Poirier’s final opponent should be. And former champion and UFC commentator Michael Bisping has the answer.

“[So in terms of which] opponent next for Dustin Poirier, yeah most of you think Justin Gaethje, 41% of you. I mean out of the four there, that [Gaethje] makes the most sense, it does. I mean if it’s gonna be his final fight, why not close the book with Justin Gaethje? They’re one and one [in their two fights so far], you know. They’re two legendary fighters, they’re always going to be linked to each other,” Bisping said during a QnA session on his YouTube channel.

Justin Gaethje

Of course, most fans agree with ‘The Count’ about Justin Gaethje being the most suitable for Poirier’s next opponent, and for the same reasons that Bisping pointed out. Gaethje and Poirier have had two fights in the UFC, both of which have been absolutely scintillating affairs. Their first, back-and-forth UFC on FOX 29 clash six years ago is one of the most memorable fights in the history of the sport, which Poirier won via a fourth-round stoppage. Their UFC 291 rematch last year for the BMF title, on the other hand, went Gaethje’s way courtesy of a spectacular head kick in the second round.

And what better way for ‘Diamond’ to bid adieu to the sport than with a trilogy to take care of unfinished business with his most memorable opponent, who is as much of a legend of the sport as Poirier. However, there is one potentially even bigger fight that could be even better for ‘The Diamond’s final fight.

Near-brawl with Conor McGregor points to another prospect for Dustin Poirier

Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor have fought three times in the UFC. Poirier, of course, has won two of those, with their third, UFC 264 clash being not just notable for ‘Mac’ suffering a horrific snapped leg, but also the scene of ‘Mac’s famous ‘Your wife’s in me DMs” barb.

‘Diamond’ has never forgiven McGregor for this insult, so much so that the duo narrowly avoided coming to blows in Las Vegas a few days ago, Poirier revealed in a recent interview. This is why Poirier facing Conor McGregor as his final opponent is also very much on the table.

After all, not only is ‘The Notorious One’ desperate for a fight but has spoken many times about wanting to face ‘The Diamond’ for a fourth time. And that fight makes perfect sense. McGregor gets to face a bona fide legend for his comeback in a fight that will undoubtedly do very well commercially. And Poirier gets to go out with a bang against the biggest superstar this sport has ever seen. Who do you think should be Dustin Poirier’s next opponent?
