Another missed cut in a major and disappearing act. Bryson DeChambeau is nowhere to be seen after he couldn’t play the weekend rounds in the 2026 PGA Championship for shooting 7-over par on Thursday and Friday. Based on his performance at the Aronimink Golf Club and Augusta National, Jim Furyk shared his thoughts on whether the LIV Golf pro is a suitable candidate for Team U.S.

Furyk told Trey Wingo on his YouTube channel, “It’s Got to Change. We do know that we need to change our qualification process. We got to move to a point system, identifying your best six players. Then you want to complement those with six Captain’s Picks. In that case, you’re looking at the golf course, horses for courses, current form, pairings, what we have on our team now, and how we can complement that to make the strongest pairings?”

The American captain was clearly not happy with the path LIV Golf pros were given to qualify for the Ryder Cup. He confirmed that they were looking at a system that would allow them to join the team without having to rely on Captain’s Picks. Beyond that, their performance and form will determine if they deserve the attention of the team captain.

“The Ryder Cup creates a lot of pressure. Guys who can take that on, handle it, love it. An away Ryder Cup is even different. There are 47,000 people not only cheering for the other team, but they are cheering against you. It’s the only time in golf when that happens. We don’t know how the LIV players what the avenue back yet is to the PGA Tour, but I think we have a lot of flexibility in the way we run it with six qualifying, six Captain’s Picks.”

Interestingly, Furyk didn’t have a clear answer about DeChambeau’s status on the team. He only vaguely hinted that if the Crushers GC captain is suitable for the squad and complements the composition, then he will be picked as a Captain’s Pick. Of course, if he makes it through automatic qualification, then there is no reason to doubt his presence in the Team U.S. squad.

But judging by his response, it seems that he wasn’t too eager to either confirm or deny DeChambeau’s relevance in Team U.S. Furyk’s hesitation over the issue is understandable. While the LIV Golf pro is an outstanding golfer, his recent form hasn’t reflected the same. The fact that he missed two cuts in a row in two majors reflects the same.

That is not the only problem that might have crossed Furyk’s mind when thinking about picking DeChambeau. The two-time U.S. Open champion has a history of poor performance in Europe.

Bryson DeChambeau’s last trip to Europe with Team U.S. didn’t reflect well on him

There is a reason Zach Johnson decided against picking Bryson DeChambeau for the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome. Two years prior to that, the LIV Golf pro had delivered a brilliant performance for the team to secure 2.5 points from 3 matches and help them win against Team Europe. But the 2018 Ryder Cup nightmare was something they couldn’t forget.

DeChambeau was a part of Jim Furyk’s first squad in the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris, France. So he has had first-hand experience of watching the LIV Golf pro play three matches for Team U.S., and he got the opportunity to be paired with two big names in Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.

Despite the great pairings, DeChambeau couldn’t secure a single point for the American side. In the end, Team U.S. lost 17½ to 10½. Those three points wouldn’t have helped them win the event. But it might have given the squad the confidence to push harder.
